Harmful pesticides found in everyday food products
Children on Mercer Island in the Seattle, Washington region, were tested for levels of pesticides from non-organic food and found to have biological markers of organophosphates, including malathion and chlorpyrifos, derived from World War II nerve gas agents. When the children switched to organic produce and juices, the pesticides completely disappeared from their bodies within 36 hours.
Medicinal plants at risk of extinction
Experts warn approximately 400 medicinal plants are at risk of extinction due to over-harvesting and deforestation. Such a scenario diminishes the chances for future discovery of cures for such disorders as cancer and AIDS.
